Visa Launches CLI Tool to Enable Autonomous AI Payments

In a significant move that bridges traditional finance with the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence, Visa has introduced a command-line interface (CLI) tool. This experimental product, named Visa CLI, allows AI agents and automated scripts to execute card payments directly, without requiring human intervention for each transaction. The announcement, made by Cuy Sheffield, Head of Visa’s Crypto division, marks the first public product to emerge from the company’s Visa Crypto Labs initiative.

“Excited to share Visa CLI, the first experimental product from Visa Crypto Labs,” Sheffield stated in a tweet on March 18, 2026, which included a link for developers to request access. The tool is designed to simplify payment integration for developers by eliminating the need to manage traditional API keys within their applications. Instead, bots and automated workflows can initiate transactions straight from a terminal environment, creating a more streamlined path for machine-driven commerce.

Pioneering Agentic Commerce on Existing Payment Rails

The launch of Visa CLI is a clear signal of the payments giant’s strategic bet on “agentic commerce”—a paradigm where autonomous software systems transact on behalf of users. In this emerging model, payments are no longer discrete, human-triggered actions but are embedded within automated workflows. An AI agent could, for instance, seamlessly pay for cloud computing resources, data APIs, or software licenses as part of completing a complex task, all without stopping for manual approval.

Visa’s approach is distinctive in that it extends its massive, established global card network to support this new mode of transaction, rather than building a separate, crypto-native system. This strategy aims to leverage the ubiquity, security protocols, and regulatory compliance frameworks of the traditional Visa network while introducing programmability for machines.

The current beta release of Visa CLI requires authentication through GitHub, indicating an initial, targeted rollout aimed squarely at the developer community.
